Take a Break?

The most important objectives to achieve tonight are downloading and installing a browser that supports Web standards, if you don't already have one installed, and downloading and extracting this book's example files to create your working folder. If doing that has taken most of the evening, feel free to call it a night. You can read the remaining material at another time. I'll see you first thing tomorrow morning, when you will learn how to create a basic Web page.

The rest of this session is entirely optional. If you still have time this evening or want to stay up a little later, it provides background information on the evolution of HTML, from the initial version first proposed in 1989 to the current HTML standards, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1, which can be helpful in understanding how HTML has become what it is. So, if you'd like to continue on, feel free to take the time to fix yourself a cup of tea or pour yourself a glass of lemonade (or whatever will perk you up). I'll see you back here in five to ten minutes.
