Chapter 15. Inside Notification Services Tools

Notification Services first shipped as Notification Services 2.0, an add-on component for SQL Server 2000, in late 2002. Because it was not developed along with the rest of SQL Server 2000, Notification Services tools were not integrated into the SQL Server 2000 toolset. In fact, there were no graphical tools for deployment and management, just a command line utility, stored procedures, views, and performance counters.

With SQL Server 2005 Notification Services, the development team had the opportunity to integrate Notification Services management into the SQL Server 2005 toolset. As a result, Notification Services can be deployed and managed with SQL Server Management Studio and configured with SQL Server Configuration Manager and Surface Area Configuration, in addition to command line utilities.

In addition to the new tools, Notification Services also added the flexibility of a management object model, Notification Services Management Objects (NMO).
